Name: The Barfield, an Autograph Collection Hotel
No. of Keys: 112
Seller: The site was originally the Oliver Rea Eakle Building, constructed in 1926, the Barfield Building is a ten storey building with a basement designed by Wyatt C. Hedrick.
The Barfield Building was originally an office building with retail on the ground floor. The building has been renovated and modified in the past but retains much of its original historical integrity. The building has been closed and empty for 25 years.
Buyer: The Barfield is part of the portfolio of Tulsa-based Coury Hospitality, which also runs the Colcord Hotel in Oklahoma City and Ambassador Tulsa — both historically significant buildings.
Amarillo’s first-ever boutique hotel is scheduled to open July 2020. The Barfield building is being transformed into the first Autograph Collection Boutique Hotel by Marriott.
“Amarillo is going to get something we’ve never had before,” said Christy King, director of Sales & Marketing. “It’s going to be a beautiful gift of a brand new boutique hotel that is upper upscale.”
Construction is moving ahead as crews are working in shifts to get the boutique hotel open by July 23. “One way we’re doing that is only 50 people are allowed in the building at one time,” said King. “We have to do two shifts, one in the morning and one at night. We only allow six people per floor and they can’t come in contact with each other.”
Delays have pushed back the opening. Once the COVID-19 Pandemic ends, 80 jobs will need to be filled. “We are looking forward to being part of the downtown revitalisation,” said King. “Opening in July is going to be a perfect time and I think it’s going to be a great economical boon for the city of Amarillo and the downtown.”
The boutique hotel will offer plush amenities such as a Speakeasy, a restaurant and second bar plus a recreation workout room.
ABC7 News has learned progress on the Rule Building is being made. An architect and design team have been hired and construction could begin in 2021.
Embodying the progressive spirit of Amarillo’s founders, The Barfield is a new hotel that brings modern luxury and charm to a historic landmark for an upscale take on Southern hospitality. Re-imagining the old Barfield Building with 112 boutique accommodations, two unique dining concepts, 2,500 square feet of event space.
The Barfield is a pet-friendly hotel situated within 15 minutes of Rick Husband Amarillo International (AMA) Airport. The hotel will pick guests up and drop them off at the gate, take care of their vehicle with valet parking, and lend them a ride around town in a luxury car.
THPT Comment: A great deal of history on this building sitting on Route 66. Well done to Marriott to sign the hotel up to their Autograph Collection brand….Look forward to the opening in July.
