Date: June 2020
Location: Welford Road, Leicester, UK
Name: Hotel Brooklyn Leicester – opening 2022
No. of Keys: 191
Seller: The land belongs to Leicester Tigers Rugby Club. The planning consent was given in October 2019. The club was also put up for sale in June 2018 with Tigers revealing that they had received “various expressions of interest from a range of potential investors” after CVC Capital Partners bought part of Premiership Rugby in December 2018.
Tigers chairman Peter Tom pledged to supporters in December that no club resources were being diverted from the playing side to the development projects around Welford Road.
Granby Halls was a live music, exhibition and sports arena and was home to basketball team Leicester Riders from 1980 to 1999.
The site first opened in 1915 when it was constructed as the training halls for Leicester’s Army recruits during World War I. The building was demolished in 2001 after being vacant for three years.
Buyer: Hotel Brooklyn is to open its second UK outpost in Leicester in the summer of 2022, following the launch of its debut property in Manchester in February this year.
Situated beside the Welford Road Stadium, home to the Leicester Tigers rugby team, Hotel Brooklyn, Leicester will comprise 191 bedrooms, including accessible or ‘Liberty’ rooms, The Lair Restaurant and Bar and Runyon’s Atrium dinner.
The new hotel, split across five floors, will also boast conference and events facilities, both in the hotel and inside the stadium.
Designed by Squid Inc, the team behind Hotel Gotham and Hotel Brooklyn, the new hotel will provide ‘high-class corporate hospitality, versatile dining showcasing both European and American influences, and atmospheric accommodation with a number of skyline suites’.
Motionspot will drive the accessible design elements of the new property, which will position itself as Leicester’s most accessible hotel.
“We are thrilled to have secured this fantastic site in Leicester – right next door to the Welford Road Stadium”, commented Robin Sheppard, chairman of Bespoke Hotels. “Being built by our trusted partners Marshall CDP, with whom we have worked several times before, we believe Hotel Brooklyn is a perfect fit for Leicester. It will bring a destination hotel into the heart of the city, attract a new audience of customers and, we hope, become a business of which the city will be truly proud.”
THPT Comment: Bespoke did great with their two hotels in Manchester…they also have a passion for making accessibility key for both the rooms and main body of the hotel…we wish them great luck with new venture.
