Date: August 2019

Location: Sants-Montjuic district, Barcelona, Spain

Name: Leonardo Royal Hotel Fira Barcelona – four star, opening late 2020

No. of Keys: 204

Seller: Fattal bought the plot of land from a local investor and planned the hotel with the full support of the municipality as the first hotel project done during the moratorium period. They have given permission only in this area because it is very close to the entrance to the main exhibition centre of Barcelona.

Buyer: Leonardo Hotels has received consent for the first hotel development authorised in Barcelona since a 2015 development freeze.

To get approval from the city council, Leonardo Hotels first needed to comply with all urban, environmental and sustainability requirements.

The property, to be branded a Leonardo Royal, will be the group’s fourth hotel in the Spanish city and the ninth in the country. Eleven storeys high, the hotel will be in the city’s Sants-Montjuïc district, close to the exhibition centre, and will have three conference rooms, parking and a rooftop terrace complete with an infinity pool.

Leonardo Hotels entered the Spanish market four years ago and has properties in Barcelona, Madrid, Granada and Bilbao.

Daniel Roger, Managing Director of Leonardo Hotels Europe & UK, commented: “This project shows our dedication to growing the Leonardo Hotels brand in Spain and is testament to Barcelona´s unrivalled position as a world-class tourist destination. The city is incredibly popular with both leisure and business guests and our new hotel will effortlessly meet the demands of both. Under the Leonardo Royal Hotel brand, we’re excited to bring a new and unique offering to this vibrant city.”

Shay Raz, General Manager of Leonardo Hotels Spain, said: “Both Spain and Barcelona are unwaveringly popular with tourists. We are committed to tourism in the city and we’re pleased to say this new hotel meets all the urban, environmental and sustainability requirements required by Barcelona City Council. We really appreciate and thank the City of Barcelona for granting us approval to build the first hotel since the moratorium.

Commenting on the strategic location of Leonardo Royal Hotel Fira Barcelona, Shay continues:
“Leonardo Royal Hotel Fira Barcelona completes our accommodation offering within the ‘Ciudad Condal’, with our sister hotels located near the Fira, the airport, and Montjuïc area.”

The new hotel, in Sants-Montjuïc district, will be the first Leonardo Hotel in Spain under the premium Leonardo Royal Hotel brand. Leonardo Royal Hotel Fira Barcelona will be a 4-star plus hotel, offering stylish, sophisticated accommodation and first-class service.

So far, Leonardo Hotels has 15 hotels under the Leonardo Royal Hotel brand; eight in Germany, one in Poland and six in the United Kingdom.

Leonardo Hotels is one of the leading and fastest-growing hotel chains in Europe. The brand is a recent entrant into the UK hotel market, with 15 hotels: six in Scotland; located in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen and Perth, four in London, and one in Southampton and Manchester.

However, it has a significant international presence, with more than 150 properties across several major European cities in Germany, Spain, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, the Netherlands, Hungary, Poland, the Czech Republic.

THPT Comment: Fattal/Leonardo doesn’t hang around…Interesting that Barcelona has opened the door to new hotels, after a four-year block, but only in this area, not throughout the city.
