Linthwaite House in the Lake District re-opens after £10m Refurbishment

Date: June 2018

Location: Linthwaite, Lake Windermere, Lake District, UK

Name: Linthwaite House

No. of Keys: 30 plus six Woodland Suites to open in Autumn 2018

Owner: Part of the Leeu Collection, headed up by Indian Analjit Singh, its existing 30 bedrooms have been renovated by internationally-renowned designer Beverley Boswell who has introduced the Leeu Collection’s elegant and sophisticated signature style.

She was also responsible for the interiors of South African sister properties Leeu Estates, Leeu House and Le Quartier Français, all in Franschhoek in the Cape Winelands.

The owners say Ms Boswell worked with the best British furniture makers and fabric designers to create modern, but comfortable country house interiors that reflect the subtle colours of the Lake District’s stunning natural beauty.

For example, “Baby Bear” leather sofas were sourced from Soane Britain, greyed oak console tables from William Yeoward, chandeliers and lights from Porta Romana, and bed throws from Johnstons of Elgin.

Subtle references to Leeu Collection’s African connections come in the shape of re-interpreted Soane signature shellback chairs that have been upholstered in green velvet with a leopard print backing and the myriad art that adorns the walls.

Uplifting colours were used in the innovative new restaurant Stella, where, hotel bosses say, guests will be able to sample some of the finest cuisine in the Lake District, based on locally sourced and organic produce that highlights the best of the Cumbrian region and the season, influenced by international celebrity chef Ritu Dalmia and her passion for Italian cooking.

Once again, the African connection has been highlighted via the use of zebra print scatter cushions.

Linthwaite House’s bar and conservatory has been opened up and extended so that guests can better enjoy the outstanding panoramic views of Windermere and the surrounding fells.

One of the highlights of the renovated property will be six newly-created Woodland Suites – two inter-connecting – that will open in Autumn.

Extremely spacious, with each room averaging 66m², these suites will feature floor-to-ceiling windows that provide picturesque panoramic views of Windermere and the Lake District landscape.

They will have an open plan bedroom, with a king-size bed and en-suite bathrooms with a bath and walk-in shower, linking to a large living space with all mod cons.

Given the new Woodland Suites and the extension of the existing building, there have been significant changes to the hotel’s well-manicured 14 acres of grounds, which have been re-worked in some detail by landscape artist Franchesca Watson and peppered with striking sculptures.

Another welcome addition to the gardens is a substantial stand-alone bar that overlooks the croquet lawn and garden chess set, as well as the flower beds, with incredible views of Windermere and the fells in the distance.

Rates start from £285 for two people sharing a double room on a B&B basis in high season.

THPT Comment: THPT acted for Leeu on the original acquisition in 2017, and have been highly impressed with their progress into Florence, London, Franschhoek as well as The Lakes…watch this space for their next delightful hotel.
