Date: May 2020

Location: South Audley Street, Mayfair, London, England, UK

Name: The xx – opening 2022

No. of Keys: 23 serviced apartments

Seller: The property is currently an upmarket retail store, under the brand – Thomas Goode

Buyer: Cain International, which has owned the property since 2016, will convert it for launch as serviced apartments in 2022. The 23-residence property is set to open in 2022, and will be housed within a Grade II listed building on the corner of South Audley Street and South Street, close to Hyde Park and The Dorchester hotel.

The building was purchased by Cain International in 2016, and the ground floor currently houses china, silverware and glass shop Thomas Goode.

It’s not clear whether Thomas Goode will remain as tenants, although according to this brochure from 2018 and accompanying website the company is set to vacate “for new accommodation on a global scale and to facilitate internet sales”.

What is known is that aside from the serviced residences, the property will offer “a small restaurant and refurbished retail space”.

Interestingly Thomas Goode already has an association with Oberoi, with Forbes reporting that the company opened ” a mini-museum and boutique at The Oberoi, Mumbai” last year.

Commenting on the news Prithvi Raj Singh Oberoi, executive chairman of the Oberoi Group said that “The iconic building in the heart of Mayfair is a perfect complement to an Oberoi branded property”, while Jonathan Goldstein, chief executive of Cain International, said:

“With a reputation for exceptional service and guest experience, Oberoi is widely regarded as one of the very best in the hospitality industry.

“We are excited to be forging this new partnership, that will see one of the world’s most authoritative brands on high-end service coming to Europe, and choosing London as the location for its debut.

“Despite current circumstances, we remain confident in the role of strong hospitality brands and in the demand for their services once we have emerged from this crisis.”

The Oberoi Group currently owns and operates 33 five-star hotels and luxury resorts across India, Indonesia, Morocco, Mauritius, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

THPT Comment: Oberoi have been keen to open in London for some years…a very small operation for their background, but at least a toe-hold in the UK’s capital…and a great Mayfair location.
