Brand and Manager: Ruby Hotels has signed a site in Stuttgart, Germany. The group will open a 150 room hotel and co-working space, converting the top floor of the city’s Gerber shopping centre.

Conversion work will start in autumn 2021, with a planned opening in spring 2023. The site is the second Ruby to be developed in a shopping centre, and will be the brand’s tenth hotel in Germany.

Munich-based hotelier Ruby Group has revealed plans to open a new project in Stuttgart in the spring of 2023. The announcement follows the February 2020 opening of Ruby Lucy in London, the group’s maiden property outside of Germany.

For the first time, Ruby will be combining its “Lean Luxury” philosophy for a hotel and a co-working space under one roof. The Ruby Hotel with 150 guest rooms and Ruby Works covering an area of 1,700 square metres (approx. 190 workstations) will take over the top floor of the city shopping mall. The Gerber mall’s central location in the city centre, within walking distance of the town hall square, combined with its attractive industrial style with high, open ceilings and exposed concrete, is an ideal urban location for Ruby in Stuttgart.

It is the second time a Ruby Hotel has been integrated into a shopping mall.

“As a conversion of former retail space right in the heart of the city, the Gerber project represents a groundbreaking milestone for us. We have created completely new room types for this project adapted to the challenging floor layouts. The excellent location, high ceilings and unusual style of the building are a perfect match for our lean luxury philosophy and the project, therefore, represents an attractive new addition to the Stuttgart hotel market,” said Michael Patrick Struck, CEO and Founder of Ruby Group.

In view of the current challenges faced by shopping malls, it is not just an opportunity for Ruby Group to explore synergies but is also a decisive step towards the growth of the Gerber shopping mall itself. Klaus Betz, Head of Real Estate at the Württembergische Lebensversicherung AG said: “We are delighted that the Gerber shopping mall is increasingly turning into a mixed-use development and indeed is being perceived as such.

This is where an attractive building offering local amenities such as retail units and restaurants focusing on quality and sustainability, also accommodates office space and a hotel development. The fact that we were able to acquire Ruby is an important milestone in Gerber’s strategic development and a sensible addition to our overall concept. This project means that we are combining more than six types of use in one development which complies with “The City of Short Distances” concept.”

Founded in 2013, Ruby Group already operates eight Ruby hotels, with 17 additional hotels either under construction or in the planning phase of construction.

THPT Comment: We’re big fans of Ruby, their philosophy and style of hotels…All the hotels are named after female names, so we have asked what this one will be.
