Date: March 2019

Location: Marble Arch, London, UK

Name: The Hard Rock Hotel London

No. of Keys: 900

Owner: The Hard Rock Hotel London will be owned and operated by GLH Hotels, owned by Singaporean GL Ltd, headed up by Quek Leng Chan and in the UK by CEO Neil Gallagher. Their other brands in the UK are Amba, Guoman, Thistle and Thistle Express.

The Hard Rock Hotel London has confirmed it will open on 30 April following the transformation of the former Cumberland hotel.

The property in Marble Arch, the first Hard Rock hotel in the UK, will be one of the largest hotels in the city with approximately 900 suites and rooms, occupying a property that was formerly a favourite of 1960s rock legend Jimi Hendrix.

It will pay tribute to Hendrix and other former residents such as Diana Ross, Bob Dylan, Stevie Wonder and Madonna, as well as leading contemporary artists, with a collection of music memorabilia.

Architectural and interior design practice Scott Brownrigg is behind the design, which aims to cater to the needs of both business and leisure travellers. It will feature two bars, a 370-seat Hard Rock Cafe and a Rock Shop selling Hard Rock merchandise.

Ian Fletcher is general manager and Stuart McGowan is hotel manager.

The Cumberland was part of J Lyons’ Strand Hotels, before being acquired by Lord Forte/Trust House Forte in 1997 for £27m (which included a bunch of other hotels, like the Strand Palace!). In 2000 Granada, then owner of Forte, sold The Cumberland off for £65m to include three other London hotels…The Cavendish, Strand Palace and Regent Palace.

THPT Comment: The Cumberland, as was, has been a lot of things over the years since it opened in 1933….but nothing like it will be as a Hard Rock Hotel!
