The Ned to Launch Private Members’ Club in Washington DC

Main Photo: The new Ned Washington, imagined

Date: May 2019

Location: Opposite the White House, Washington DC, USA

Name: Ned’s Club DC – opening late 2020

No. of Keys: None – just a member’s club

Seller: The new Ned will be situated in a building dating back to 1930 that is connected to historic branches of Bank of America and Riggs Bank Corcoran on Pennsylvania Avenue NW.

Buyer: Soho House – owner of The Ned – one of London’s most ambitious hotel openings in recent years – is to open an outpost opposite the White House in Washington DC.

However, the new outlet will not be open to the public like the original, which opened in 2017 as a 252-bedroom hotel with nine public restaurants, extensive leisure facilities and a private members’ club. It will be operated by Soho House & Co as a private members club.

Ned’s Club DC will be located across the top five floors of an Art Deco building in President’s Park, opposite the White House and US Treasury building.

The Ned in London, is situated in the former Sir Edwin Lutyens-designed Midland Bank building on Poultry in the City, who last July opened the 17th bar in addition to it’s nine restaurants!

Gareth Banner, managing director of the Ned in London, said: “We think Ned’s Club is well suited to a city like Washington DC, which has much more to offer than powerhouse politicos and lobbyists. Washington is a vibrant city with a lot of culture, history and a thriving food scene.”

Ned’s Club DC will be designed and run by Soho House & Co, unlike the London site, which was developed as a joint venture with US-based Sydell Group. It will comprise a restaurant, bar, library, sitting room, two floors of events spaces and rooftop terrace with views overlooking the White House and Washington Monument.

Banner is currently working with Soho House’s US design team “to agree much of the operational design detail” while remaining based in London.

Sir Edwin Lutyens, who inspired the name of the Ned – it was his nickname – had a brief connection with Washington DC as the designer of the British Ambassador’s residence in 1928. It was the only building Lutyens designed in North America.

Soho House & Co’s eclectic portfolio of global businesses comprises 23 private members’ clubs and hotels, a beach club, 13 restaurant brands, the Soho Home collection of furniture and interior accessories and Soho Works workspace.

Soho House Hong Kong and Soho Warehouse in downtown Los Angeles will open this year, while launches in Paris and Milan have been confirmed for 2020.

THPT Comment: No holding back Nick Jones, his partners and fabulous team of staff…full credit to Nick. Word has it that a third Ned is on the cards, in a European capital city.
