Seller: Two city centre office blocks, next to St Columba’s Gaelic Church, will be demolished to allow the developer to build a four star hotel.
Buyer: Austrian hospitality company Vienna House is set to open its first UK hotel on the St Vincent Street site after Glasgow City Council approved an application from Artisan Real Estate, a property development and investment company.
The 250-bed hotel, with bar, restaurant and gym, will replace two adjoining office blocks which were built in the mid-1980s.
It will be set back from St Vincent Street to “give breathing space” to the neighbouring church’s steeple.
“This will be Vienna House’s first hotel in the UK and represents a very positive new addition to Glasgow city centre’s tourist economy.”
The new hotel will replace two 1980s office blocks familiar to most Glaswegians. The hotel will be car-free and 35 cycle parking spaces will be provided, with 10 available to staff.
The bar and restaurant are planned for the corner of St Vincent Street and Pitt Street and the gym is set to be on the corner of Pitt Street and West George Street Lane.
An accessible bedroom will be provided on each floor of the hotel, with an accessible toilet on each public floor and an accessible changing facility on the lower ground floor.
A design statement adds: “To reference the traditional use of ceramics in Glasgow and some of the tones that characterise this tradition, we propose using a varied palette of green/teal/turquoise terracotta cladding. “This will give this new building a bold and distinctive character but one rooted in the context of Glasgow.”
