Waldorf Astoria Launches in Bangkok

Date: August 2018

Location: At the Ratchaprasong intersection Bangkok, Thailand

Name: Waldorf Astoria Bangkok

No. of Rooms: 171

Seller/Owner: The 60-story Magnolias Ratchadamri Boulevard (MRB) buildng is located at 151 Ratchadamri Road, and offers convenient access to some of the areas shopping centers, including Gaysorn Village mall. Charoenkrung Creative District, Grand Palace, the Bangkok Mass Transit System (BTS) Skytrain and the city’s flower market are also nearby.

Buyer: Magnolia Quality Development Corp. Ltd owns the asset, while Hilton manages it. Hilton, Asia Pacific has announced the biggest (by hotel height?) hotel launch in Bangkok of 2018 this morning with the official grand opening of the Waldorf Astoria Bangkok.

Discussing the launch at a press conference last night Alan Watts, president of Hilton in Asia Pacific said: “As the first Waldorf Astoria in South East Asia, the opening of Waldorf Astoria Bangkok adds a much-anticipated chapter to the brand’s story in Asia.

It builds on our series of existing Waldorf Astoria hotels in Beijing, Shanghai and Chengdu, while prefacing the arrival of additional Waldorf Astoria hotels in the near future.”

Found within the 60-storey Magnolias Ratchadamri Boulevard, the new hotel is a striking one – with a design from award-winning architect André Fu and his AFSO studio which incorporates contemporary architecture with traditional Thai artisanal elements creating a set of spacious “luxuriously appointed” rooms and suites, with spa-style bathrooms featuring some rather glam marble bathtubs.

Waldorf Astoria Bangkok features common-area amenities including Magnolia Ballroom, a more than 7,800-square-foot event room for 700 people. Additionally, an open-air infinity pool with private cabanas, a 24-hour fitness centre, a spa and a rooftop restaurant are available at the hotel.

From levels 55 to 57 of the hotel, the design of the Waldorf Astoria Bangkok’s eateries the Bull & Bear, The Loft and Champagne Bar, is undertaken by design and concept firm AvroKO, with all three restaurants boasting sweeping views of Bangkok through vast floor-to-ceiling windows.

“We are thrilled to be adding Waldorf Astoria Bangkok to our rapidly expanding luxury portfolio here in Asia Pacific,” said Dino Michael, global head of Waldorf Astoria Hotels & Resorts.

MQDC CEO Khun Visit Malaisirirat spoke at the launch “MQDC is honoured to partner with Hilton, a longstanding global leader in the hotel industry, in introducing the first Waldorf Astoria property in Southeast Asia,” said Mr Malaisirirat.

THPT Comment: A welcome addition to Bangkok’s hotel scene. Back in September 2017,  Waldorf Astoria Hotels & Resorts signed an agreement with Ithaafushi Investments Pvt. to open the Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi, a 138-key hotel in Maldives.
