Buyer: GBI AG, who claim to be the largest active hotel project developer in Germany’s major cities. Over the past 16 years, they have also developed new product ideas for student living, serviced apartments and micro-living areas nationwide with their SMARTments line.

They have hotels like HI Express Koln, Movenpick Berln and the Park Inn by Radisson Nurenberg under their belt, as well as several Premier Inns in Germany.

The UK chain Premier Inn is currently securing hotel locations in prime locations in Germany. In the centre of Duisburg, at the western tip of the new Mercator district, a 214-room hotel is being built by the partners Blankbau and GBI AG . The new Premier Inn will be directly opposite the town hall and Salvator Church.

“This outstanding location in the city centre is to be optimally used with the combination of a hotel, a shop row on the ground floor and an adjacent office property,” says Dr. Volker Flemming, managing partner of the Blankbau group. The Premier Inn will have three large panoramic suites on the top of five floors. Construction is slated to begin in mid-2020, with completion scheduled two years later.

The hotel brand Premier Inn, which belongs to the Whitbread Group, promises “premium quality at economy prices”. For some years now it has been expanding its presence from the mother country Great Britain to Germany. After the start of the first Premier Inn in Germany in 2016 in Frankfurt / M. other hotels in Hamburg and Munich followed. By the end of 2020, at least 20 Premier Inn hotels are expected to be in operation. Premier Inn has already secured 48 locations in more than 15 major German cities

“We are very pleased that this includes Duisburg as an important location for an economically strong region,” says Dr. Michael Hartung , Managing Director and Director Development for Premier Inn Germany. “And the excellent location of our new house directly opposite the town hall is all the more gratifying.” The western Ruhr area is increasingly targeting Premier Inn anyway. In front of the Duisburg prestige property, a new development has already started at Essen Central Station.

The Mayor of Duisburg Sören Link is also pleased with the project : “The new Mercatorviertel stands for the living history of Duisburg, which we make future-proof through a unique form of urban development. I hope that the combination of a hotel with a shop and an adjacent office property will provide important impulses for our inner city. ”

For GBI AG, the house in the centre of Duisburg is the sixth development for Premier Inn. In addition to the first hotel in Frankfurt, the successful collaboration now also includes Leipzig, Düsseldorf, Hamburg and Nuremberg. “This experience shows us that Premier Inn is the ideal location for the great location in Duisburg,” said GBI board member Jung.
