Helvetic Investment Acquires Dorint Parkhotel, Moenchengladbach, Germany

Seller: Dorint, one of the best known hotel brands in Germany, whose origin goes back to this hotel, as this was their first hotel, dating back to 1959…now numbering some 40 hotels. Dorint is currently the leaseholder.

Buyer: The hotel has been sold to the investor, Helvetic Investment GmbH, by brokers, real estate company Greif & Contzen. Who the seller/freeholder is, is unclear.

Helvetic Investment GmbH acquired the hotel in an asset deal with a lease contract from the Dorint Group in order to re-position it in the medium term. The new owner, however, says that the Dorint brand has always been the best operator for the hotel and will remain as the managers. “The Dorint Parkhotel is the leading hotel in Mönchengladbach and has a special meaning for the city and the city society. We are aware of this particular importance as an investor, ”said a spokesman for Helvetic.

Whilst Dorint started life in Mönchengladbach the group is now based in Cologne. The name has a great tradition in Mönchengladbach. In 1959, Werner Dornieden, head of the Rheydter furniture manufacturer Kalderoni, opened a model hotel for the industry in order to show his customers the latest furniture in the hotel business. The permanent furniture exhibition became the nucleus of the chain, whose name was derived from Dornieden and International – Dorint.

Dornieden opened numerous other hotels over the years until the 1970s when the chain was taken over by the Cologne real estate developer Herbert Ebertz and partners. At that point, Dornieden’s furniture store had gone bankrupt. The French Accor group moved in 2002, and by 2006 the Dorint was a brand within Accor with around 40 hotels.
