Salter Brothers Switches To Accor For Recently Acquired Travelodge Hotels In Australia

A big bet on hospitality’s future when the deal was struck last July, the punt is paying off, with the sector’s revival gaining momentum, propelled by the end of lockdowns and opening of borders.

Although challenges remain, demand is building and will be helped by the return to offices, Mr Salter said. Leisure travel is already rebounding in Salter’s other hotels.

In what may be a first in the Australian market, the Accor agreement includes ESG targets for green energy procurement, waste and energy, water reduction and importantly staff diversity.

“It’s a sign of things to come in the sector,” Mr Salter said. The portfolio will join Accor’s existing 340-strong network of hotels in Australia, tapping the benefits of the Paris-based giant’s global network. The deal is Accor’s largest integration since it’s $1.2 billion acquisition of Mantra Group in 2018.

Looking forward, TFE Hotels is in the middle of an exciting growth period having opened 17 hotels over the last 24 months, with nine new hotels in the pipeline. The sale announcement will not change their current long-term plans from an operational or corporate perspective.  TFE has the exclusive rights to operate the Travelodge Hotel brand in Australia and New Zealand until 2035 and they continue to grow the Travelodge brand with new hotels like Wynyard Quarter in Auckland and Hurstville, and with Travelodge Hotel Westmead in the pipeline.

TFE welcomed the 124-room Travelodge Hotel Hurstville into the network in January 2022. Developed by the Illawarra Catholic Club (Club Central) and operated by TFE Hotels, the 124-room Travelodge which sits adjacent to the club, features subtle interiors by Chada, complete with a natural colour palette and plenty of greenery; a rooftop bar and restaurant with a vergola and unobstructed views to Bowral, Botany and Mittagong; a ground floor grab ‘n go; and the largest corporate function space outside of Sydney’s CBD.

“Our Travelodges are always situated in fantastic locations,” CEO Antony Ritch said. “Take Travelodge Hurstville -situated in Sydney’s bustling southern corridor – which, in addition to the Club offerings and hotel amenities, also gives guests the option to host large-scale meetings and events within striking distance of the CBD.

”TFE will open the 100-room Travelodge Westmead, as part of the multi-million-dollar West Grove development in Sydney’s western suburbs in Q1 2024. The 2,150 sqm West Grove site is the gateway to the Westmead’s health, innovation and education district, an area currently being transformed through $1.5 billion government and university investment into a comprehensive and contemporary Precinct and hub of innovation, research, and excellence.

Hurstville and Westmead join a strong line up of Travelodge properties in Australia and New Zealand including Travelodge Hotel Wynyard Quarter in Auckland (opened 2020); Travelodge Hotel Wellington; Travelodge Hotel Hobart (will undergo a refurbishment in 2022), Travelodge Hotel Hobart Airport, Travelodge Resort Darwin (refurbished in 2020); Travelodge Hotel Melbourne Docklands (refurbished in 2020); and Travelodge Hotel Sydney Airport.
